Sirius Team Challenge – Training Event

It’s here – the first training event for Sirius Team Challenge, the exciting new event for teams of rescue dogs.

Date: Saturday 16th January 2016

Location: Winsford, Cheshire - an indoor venue, further information and joining instructions will be emailed to participants

Numbers: Limited to 15 people

Cost: The day costs £30 which includes tea, coffee and cake, but you’ll need to bring a packed lunch

Renowned sighthound trainer Jim Greenwood will be running the day, which will go through the different elements forming the competition for individual handler/dog pairs (you don’t need to be part of a team for the training day). It’s a great opportunity to come along and find out more about this exciting new competition which you’ll see at shows and events in 2016 for the first time.

To ensure a great experience for everyone, places are limited to 15 people. Don’t worry if you can’t attend this one, we are already planning further training events (dates to be confirmed shortly) in the West Midlands and in Dorset, with more to follow.

To get the best out of the day, it’s a good idea if you have already done some basic training with your dog, and you are comfortable with basic cues such as Sit, Stay and Down plus have basic heelwork (i.e. your dog walks to heel nicely alongside you). If you have any doubts about your suitability, please email Jim on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

To recap, the elements are:

  • Team Stay - The team will be asked to complete a group stay for 2 minutes
  • Stroller - This element is modelled on a stroll in the country – you’ll be judged on basic heelwork with a few fun obstacles thrown in such as a small jump, a gate or a tunnel
  • Mark - Your dog will be asked to identify which container contains a scent
  • Search - Find and locate a hidden object
  • Ninja - Your dog will be sat facing you at a distance of approximately 3 metres and you’ll give a series of non verbal cues (no clickers, whistles etc) to ask your dog to carry out some simple exercises including recall, sit, stay etc.
  • Emergency Stop/Recall - Dog to be called off a moving object
  • Teamwork – The judge will be awarding marks for the partnership demonstrated between you and your dog during all the exercises and between them. This will include how you handle, your dog’s responsiveness, how you react to mistakes and correct them, how you both react to distraction and your overall teamwork together.
